I came across the video on how to make these apple roses on Facebook. It was so cool to see how a few simple steps could lead to such a fancy food art presentation. You can find the original step-by-step recipe and video demo from Cooking with Manuela.
Instead of going for all red, I wanted to implement yellow and green colors too for the full fall look. Since the market didn’t sell individual green apples, I left with a pear instead. My choice of filling was apricot and pineapple preserves.
It felt like I was doing hands-on art putting this together, except the “playdough” was real and edible. The messy counter and sticky hands added to the fun factor! Make sure to roll slowly on the last step and put the rose in the greased muffin tin immediately to prevent it from falling apart.
I wasn’t sure if these were going to taste as good as they look. But wow! They turned out pretty and delicious. I loved the crispy bite into the hot apple and pears. The apricot-pineapple preserves added the perfect amount of sweetness, without being overwhelming. I packed it as dessert for our picnic :). There’s no doubt that I’ll definitely be making this again.
